You overpay tax (e.g., wrong tax code, only working part-year). You tell HMRC via your online Personal Tax Account, phone, or letter. They review and issue a refund, usually by bank transfer.

Gather your P60. Check if your total taxable income is less than your £12,570 Personal Allowance. The tax you paid is likely your refund. For complex cases, use an online calculator or wait for HMRC’s official P800 calculation.

If claimed after the tax year ends (after 5th April), most refunds are issued from June onwards. It can take several weeks after HMRC contacts you.

You have a Personal Savings Allowance (PSA):

  • Basic (20%) rate taxpayer: £1,000 interest tax-free.
  • Higher (40%) rate taxpayer: £500 interest tax-free.
  • Additional (45%) rate taxpayer: £0 allowance.
